“New ideas must use old buildings”, Jane Jacobs wrote in her book, The Death and Life of Great American Cities. Our site Snäckan 8 is today regarded as an outdated and obsolete office building. However, although the building might have outgrown its purpose, it should be considered for the value found it is existing structure. It can be seen as a solid skin adaptable for another life. The reasoning for its demolition is founded on the fact that the current state of the building with its small windows, room height and layout does not meet the modern requirements for its purpose. It is also stated that the new building must be well designed with good usability in mind over time and shall contribute positively to the development of a vibrant and attractive urban environment. Adaptive reuse is the process of changing a building’s primary functions and repurposing it. An assessment of the existing framework can reveal new possibilities (as well as problems), reveal potential, and result in a new program that exists in harmony with the original shell. Embedded in the complexity of the new is the essence of the old, resulting in a building that is rich in culture and context.
